Modern day neurologists, philosophers, and engineers struggle to find the answers to these questions. Broadly, the only logical answer is we do not understand these topics well enough yet. It is only matter time before we figure it out or make life on accident. In the world of Star Trek, such life is the legacy of the Soong family. For generations they struggled to improve humanity until the startling realization that humanity is a lost cause. It would be easier to start from scratch. In terms of production date, the first Soong we meet is given the nickname "Often Wrong". Ironically being wrong didn't stop him from creating several functioning positronic brains before any other humans had created one. Of his creations the two that are most prominent are Data and Lore. One is a reflection of good, the other of evil. The question we must ask ourselves is if he is truly often wrong, which one is the right representation of humanity? Which one will we meet when the time comes? We don't even respect life amongst our own kind. How will we deal with new forms of life?
